Once upon a time, before “friend” was a verb, Liz Lemon was a saint, and mustaches on sticks were a thing, we girls had to plan our weddings without Pinterest.
I know, right?
How we managed to coordinate our colors and pick out our bridesmaid’s gifts without the illegal distribution of online images is simply beyond me. And yet somehow we did it—blissfully unaware of how totally lame our wedding albums would look a mere eight years later when they fail... read more

1. Women at War?
I’ve got a post over at Her.Meneutics this morning responding to the Ann Romney/Hilary Rosen debacle and all the war imagery that’s being used to try and rally women in the 2012 election:
“Frankly, I’m tired of both sides using violent imagery to describe the difficult decisions that I, and my sisters, make every day, and I’m tired of seeing those decisions reduced to bumper sticker ideologies that can be exploited for political gain. ... read more

I found these images via the delightful Rachel LaMothe Stone, and simply had to share them. They were created by her father, Tom LaMothe, and are used here with his permission. Tom is the pastor of First Baptist Church of Greenport in Greenport, New York. Talk about learning to love the Bible for what it is, not what we want it to be!

So the other night I dreamed that my sister Amanda and I were teammates on The Amazing Race.
When we arrived at Buenos Aires, Argentina, we were surprised to find that the locals were celebrating a religious holiday that honored St. Bridget of Ireland and Chris Matthews of MSNBC. The streets were crowded with people carrying enormous posters of St. Bridget and Chris Matthews, and all the TVs were turned to MSNBC.
(The strange thing is, I don’t even have cable. )
We got lost. However, t... read more

Just a quick note to thank you all for your kind, funny, and encouraging comments yesterday. They meant so much to me, and today I woke up feeling more energized and enthusiastic than I have in a long time. Wish I had time to write each one of you personally – but I read every comment and am so very grateful. (I too am pulling for "vagina" to be the most popular comment of the week!)
Also, looks like Pip is almost finished with her nest. It's a two-story mansion this year.&nbs... read more

I was busy hanging out with the good folks of Mars Hill, Grand Rapids yesterday and didn’t get the chance to post Sunday Superlatives. But there were just too many great things to share this week to let it go, so instead I hope you will enjoy today's Monday superlatives.

1. Mars Hill – Ruth Lenten Series
On Sunday morning, I’ll be speaking at Mars Hill in Grand Rapids, Michigan as part of their Ruth Lenten Series. If you live in the area, gatherings are at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. If you want to listen online, you can subscribe to the podcast or listen here. I’m super-excited—mostly because Ruth is one the most inspiring women of valor found in Scripture, and I just love highlighting all the ways in which she broke the rules. I&r... read more

I’m home for a few days, but exhausted from travelling, so I’ll probably take the rest of the weekend off from blogging to catch up on email, watch every episode of The Daily Show I missed, and hide in the basement from tornadoes. In the meantime, check out our most popular posts of February:

It’s been over a year since we did the last “Ask Dan and Rachel” video post. Now that my year of biblical womanhood is over, I thought you might have some questions for us—about the project, about our marriage, about our strange, self-employed life in East Tennessee.
So leave your questions below, and be sure to use the “like” feature to indicate which questions you most want answered. If your question is specifically for Dan, or specifically for me, pl... read more

So y’all know I’m not a big fan of open letters. I’ve even written an open letter to the open letter, bidding it farewell.
I don’t like open letters because, in the blogging world, they’re typically employed to issue one-way rants against people we don’t like, all while maintaining the appearance of a conversation. That’s not really my style, so I try to avoid reading and writing them.
But yesterday I got to thinking that, just because open lette... read more

Oprah gives away cars. I give away t-shirts.
But what makes my list of favorite things extra special is that all these gifts give back. From fair trade coffee for the hubby, to handcrafted jewelry from Rwanda for the sis, to a brood of chickens for a family in need, you’ll find gift ideas here that have an impact far greater than what gets measured as “consumer confidence” by reporters this year.
As promised, I tried to include some of your favorite things i... read more

I’ve been living in denial for the past few weeks, avoiding cable TV and political news sites in a futile attempt to delay my exposure to election season for as long as possible. But now that 4,823 people in Iowa have declared that Michelle Bachmann should be the next president and the political ads are running through prime time, full immersion seems inevitable. Didn’t we just do this a few years ago? Can’t we enjoy the peace and serenity of watching the DOW jump up... read more

An observation:
If I’m super-tired at the end of a hard day and I decide to take a short nap, I feel guilty about it for the rest of the night. So much “wasted” time!
But if a friend announces on Facebook that she’s decided to take a short nap to try and recover from a hard day, I write a positive comment encouraging her to take care of herself…as does just about everyone else. It&r... read more

My apologies for the late post. I’ve been weaning myself off of caffeine this weekend, so I basically just woke up. You know that scene in The Great Divorce in which C.S. Lewis described the damned as only vaguely human, “shrunk and shut up in themselves,” alienated from the world by choice?
…Yeah. Dan’s getting a little picture of that this weekend.
Anyway, on to superlatives!

While most readers seemed to enjoy today’s post, “25 Things

conservatives disproportionately, insinuating that those who oppose gay
marriage and “happy holiday” greetings do so solely out of fear. That was
certainly not my intent. I tried to
include a mix of issues (some serious, some silly) that are amplified by conservatives
and liberals alike to appear more threatenin... read more
