It wasn’t that long ago…

Comments
So lately I’ve been staying up until 2 a.m. reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett—a beautiful novel set in Jackson Mississippi during the civil rights movement. (I noticed in Thursday’s comment section that several of you were reading it too!)  Whenever I read books like these, I am reminded of the fact that it really wasn’t that long ago that in many states… Interracial marriage was illegal White restaurant owners could refused to serve black patrons Afr... read more

That's a good question

Comments
Perhaps the most significant life lesson I’ve learned in my young adulthood is that knowing all the answers isn’t as important as asking good questions. So every now and then I like to use Fridays to 1) link to other bloggers and writers who have asked compelling questions during the week and 2) open the floor for you to share whatever questions you’ve been wrestling with lately. Some things that got me thinking this week: Jason Boyett asks, How do doubters achieve a balance... read more

What is the gospel?

Comments
I swear I'm not just looking for a quick, easy post. I’ve just been fascinated recently by the variety of responses I’ve encountered regarding this simple, yet profoundly important question. So I thought I'd pose it to you: What is the good news?  Or, as we used to ask in the newsroom: What's the headline? (Photo by Zarko Drincic)... read more

That's A Good Question

Comments
One of the best things I learned last week was how to ask better questions—both of myself and other people. When blurting out your own opinion is not an option, asking a good question is the best way to really further a meaningful dialog. In fact, I’m beginning to think that that questions are almost always the best way to further meaningful dialog….even when you do have the option to say what you think! If you were to die tonight, do you know if you would go to heaven or hel... read more

I don’t think I would have made it through the 2008 election had it not been for this daily dose of smart, hilarious satire. David Dark, author of The Sacredness of Questioning Everything, seems to appreciate Colbert as well, for he begins his chapter on “Quest... read more

Questions for YOU - the Pivot Questionnaire

Comments
If you’ve ever seen “Inside the Actor’s Studio” with James Lipton, you are familiar with the Pivot Questionnaire—ten questions that Bernard Pivot always asked his guest in the great French television series,” Bouillon de Culture.” In honor of our month of questions, I thought I’d ask these ten questions of my readers.  It’s a great way for us to get to know one another better...and if you’ve never commented on the blog before, th... read more

Mistaking Our Religion for God

Comments
Today we begin our discussion of The Sacredness of Questioning Everything by David Dark (Zondervan, 2009).  I hope you’ve had the opportunity to get a copy of your own, because this is a good book, the kind that stretches your thinking and will likely impact different readers in different ways. Having read the table of contents on Amazon, one reader e-mailed me to say he didn’t approve of my choice. “The first chapter is about questioning God,” he protested. Read ... read more

Dare We Ask?

Comments
On Monday we will begin our discussion about David Dark’s book The Sacredness of Questioning Everything. To get us thinking in that direction and to address some of the issues that arose in the last post, I thought I’d pose two important questions about, well, asking questions: 1.    Is it irreverent to ask questions about God? 2.    Should we only ask questions to which we can find answers? I’ve posted my response in the first comment below. ... read more

Nine Responses that DO NOT Help a Skeptic

Comments
I ask a lot of questions – about my faith, about the world, about politics, about Christianity, about theology, about everything.   I’m rarely satisfied with easy answers, which means I’ve become a bit of a skeptic over the past few years.  I’m less certain about things, less convinced of my previously held assumptions. There’s a chance that this has made me a little obnoxious.  Occasionally, my persistent questioning gets too aggressive or perha... read more
