Ask Dan and Rachel...

Comments
It’s been over a year since we did the last “Ask Dan and Rachel” video post. Now that my year of biblical womanhood is over, I thought you might have some questions for us—about the project, about our marriage, about our strange, self-employed life in East Tennessee.  So leave your questions below, and be sure to use the “like” feature to indicate which questions you most want answered. If your question is specifically for Dan, or specifically for me, pl... read more

An Open Letter to Scot McKnight

Comments
So y’all know I’m not a big fan of open letters. I’ve even written an open letter to the open letter, bidding it farewell.  I don’t like open letters because, in the blogging world, they’re typically employed to issue one-way rants against people we don’t like, all while maintaining the appearance of a conversation. That’s not really my style, so I try to avoid reading and writing them. But yesterday I got to thinking that, just because open lette... read more

My favorite things – 2011! (win a free t-shirt)

Comments
Oprah gives away cars.  I give away t-shirts.  But what makes my list of favorite things extra special is that all these gifts give back. From fair trade coffee for the hubby, to handcrafted jewelry from Rwanda for the sis, to a brood of chickens for a family in need, you’ll find gift ideas here that have an impact far greater than what gets measured as “consumer confidence” by reporters this year.  As promised, I tried to include some of your favorite things i... read more

13 Things I Won’t Do This Election Season

Comments
I’ve been living in denial for the past few weeks, avoiding cable TV and political news sites in a futile attempt to delay my exposure to election season for as long as possible.  But now that 4,823 people in Iowa have declared that Michelle Bachmann should be the next president and the political ads are running through prime time, full immersion seems inevitable. Didn’t we just do this a few years ago? Can’t we enjoy the peace and serenity of watching the DOW jump up... read more

What do these photos have in common?

Comments
I got them from Wylio! Which means they are 1) legal to use, and 2) super-easy to stick into the blog with attribution.  I like to take some credit for the existence of Wylio because it was my constant complaining about the tedium of incorporating photos into blog posts that inspired my husband and his friends to create it. Now there are thousands of users, including many of you. Wylio’s even been featured on TechCrunch. For all you early-adopters, Wylio’s running a sweet pr... read more

On being kinder to ourselves

Sunday Superlatives (Half-Awake Edition): 7/3/2011

Comments
My apologies for the late post.  I’ve been weaning myself off of caffeine this weekend, so I basically just woke up. You know that scene in The Great Divorce in which C.S. Lewis described the damned as only vaguely human, “shrunk and shut up in themselves,” alienated from the world by choice?  …Yeah. Dan’s getting a little picture of that this weekend.  Anyway, on to superlatives!  Around the Blogosphere… Best Video:Improv Eve... read more

Good News - An update from Charity: Water

Comments
I am so pleased that between the Rally to Restore Unity and my birthday, we raised $5,000—enough money to fund an entire water project for Charity:Water! Yesterday I received this update: Rachel,  You knew there was a water crisis in our world and you did something about it. In the past 18 months, you started a fundraising campaign on mycharitywater.org  You probably knew then that 100% of the money you raised would go directly to water projects in developing countries. &nb... read more

While most readers seemed to enjoy today’s post, “25 Things That Shouldn’t Scare Christians,” I understand that some felt I was picking on conservatives disproportionately, insinuating that those who oppose gay marriage and “happy holiday” greetings do so solely out of fear. That was certainly not my intent.  I tried to include a mix of issues (some serious, some silly) that are amplified by conservatives and liberals alike to appear more threatenin... read more

It’s already 11:30 p.m. and yet the light from my computer screen continues to illuminate the dark room. Dan won’t be home until midnight, so I have at least 30 more minutes to indulge in this compulsive habit that has me clicking through picture after picture online.  What would he think if he knew I was spending time on this?
