“What does it say about the college co-ed Susan Fluke [sic], who goes before a congressional committee and says that she must be paid to have sex. What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute...So, if we’re gonna sit here, and if we’re gonna have a part in this, then we want something in return, Ms. Fluke: And that would be the videos of all this sex posted online so we can see what we are getting for our money.” – Rush Limbau... read more

I’ve been living in denial for the past few weeks, avoiding cable TV and political news sites in a futile attempt to delay my exposure to election season for as long as possible. But now that 4,823 people in Iowa have declared that Michelle Bachmann should be the next president and the political ads are running through prime time, full immersion seems inevitable. Didn’t we just do this a few years ago? Can’t we enjoy the peace and serenity of watching the DOW jump up... read more

So, who do you think will be the next president?
Obama? Trump? Palin? Romney?
Or, perhaps a better question would be—who do you want to be the next president?

A few months ago I shared 13 things that make me a lousy evangelical. Well now that I’ve spent some time with the more progressive crowd (most recently at Big Tent Christianity), I thought I’d share 13 things that make me a lousy progressive:
1. I don’t have any tattoos.
2. I actually think it’s possible to overanalyze a metaphor.
3. The word “inerrant” may make my scalp itch, but the word “inspired” still rings true.
4. Sometimes ... read more

In a fascinating interview with Christianity Today, 92-year-old Billy Graham shared some candid thoughts on aging, evangelicalism, the past, and the future.
When asked if he would do anything differently, Graham responded:
Yes, of course. I'd spend more time at home with my family, and I'd study more and preach less. I wouldn't have taken so many speaking engagements, including some of the things I did over the years that I probably didn't really need to do—weddings and fune... read more

Reporters: Before you report unconfirmed information—wait.
Bloggers: Before you assume motive in a senseless act—wait.

Believe me. I was right there believing every report that came in, right there feeling pissed at Sarah Palin for her crosshairs, right there considering a nasty blog post about the Tea Party. And while I still think those crosshairs are completely irresponsi... read more

Next Friday I’ll post some photos/video updating you on the biblical womanhood project—specifically my afternoon on the roof doing penance over the jar of contention (scheduled for tomorrow) and my first official etiquette lesson (scheduled for Monday).
In the meantime, I’m trying to decide whether or not to vote in the upcoming election. Here’s how the conversation has been playing out in my... read more

Since cutting our cable, Dan and I have enjoyed a break from the endless speculation and drama of 24-hour cable news and instead rely on a few trusted print and internet sources for our information. This has improved our quality of life significantly, making us less angry and more informed…(although I have to admit I miss Anderson Cooper during disasters).
This most recent flap with Shirley Sherrod reveals just how out-of-control our sound bite culture has become and why we decided... read more

So Australia’s new prime minister is a woman…and an atheist.
"I am not going to pretend a faith I don't feel," Julia Gillard explained to the press. “For people of faith, I think the greatest compliment I could pay to them is to respect their genuinely held beliefs and not to engage in some pretence about mine.”

Liberty University describes itself as “the world’s largest Christian college” with the stated mission “to develop Christ-centered men and women with the values, knowledge, and skills essential to impact tomorrow’s world.”
But as you’ve probably heard, the administration has invited controversial talk show host Glenn Beck to deliver the commencement address for the Class of 2010 on May 15.

Despite what some may say, there is not a “Christian” position in the health care debate. There are Christians who support the legislation passed by Congress last night, and there are Christians who oppose it.
(Full disclosure: I supported it, and did a little happy dance at 10 p.m. for all my friends with preexisting conditions.)
While an individual’s religious values will certainly factor into his or her perspective on this hot-button issue, the diversity of opinions with... read more

Last week, at the 2009 Value Voters Summit, former Arkansas governor and presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee won a straw poll for the 2012 election. Now, as I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I don’t consider myself a “values voter,” at least not in the sense that the phrase is used in American politics today. To claim that the Republican Party (or any political party for that matter) represents the holy, radical teachings of Jesus Christ is just plain ridiculous in my opin... read more

I never understood why many Christians enjoy conservative pundits like Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, and Michelle Malkin. It’s not because they report things that contradict my socialist agenda or anything like that. I’m not against conservatism or conservative media in general; some of my favorite bloggers are conservatives. No, the reason why I don’t like them is because they are just so . . . nasty.
Last July on “Fox and Friends,&rdquo... read more

This is not a post about health care. We’ve discussed that issue in the past, and I understand and celebrate the fact that there is a diversity of opinion about reform. Though I support a public option, I respect those who have concerns that the plan being considered in congress might actually raise cost and reduce quality. These are legitimate concerns that should certainly be considered in every discussion.
But this is not a post about health care; it’s a post about civility.

There can be no doubt that Jesus went to great lengths to make a clear distinction between the kingdoms of this world and the Kingdom of God. With carefully chosen words and images charged with first-century political meaning, he constantly reminded his followers that they were to be a set-apart people, a people who lived counter-culturally by loving their enemies, praying for those who persecuted them, lending without expecting anything in return, and surrendering allegiance to a crucified and ... read more

The fact that the murder of Kansas abortion provider Dr. George Tiller is still making headlines nearly two weeks after his death has led some to accuse the media of exploiting the situation to paint all pro-life advocates as violent extremists. Although I’m not convinced that reporting on the incident reflects a liberal bias as much as the more practical “if it bleeds it leads” bias, it is clear that much of the rhetoric among left-wing personalities like Keith Olb... read more

With the expected trial of reporters Laura Ling and Euna Lee in North Korea this week, I was once again reminded of the incredible sacrifices that journalists make to bring us stories from around the world. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported 125 cases of imprisonment in 2008, and has confirmed the deaths of 14 journalists from eight countries in 2009.
Ling and Lee were reporting on female refugees abducted by human traffickers when the two were said to have crossed the border ... read more

Our recent discussion about torture brought to mind some tough questions I’ve been asking myself recently. Chief among them are these— 1) To what extent can we apply the teachings of Jesus to an earthly kingdom? 2) Are the teachings of Jesus too radical to take literally?

Last week, President Obama’s Justice Department published previously classified memos that outlined the Bush administration’s legal justification for torturing detainees. According to the memos, techniques included waterboarding, walling (hitting a detainee repeatedly against a wall), facial holds and slaps, stress positions, sleep deprivation, and releasing insects into a confinement box.
All of this was going on while President Bush defiantly declared in a press conference that &l... read more

So I gotta call Summit Ministries out on this one. I noticed an interview on the homepage of their Web site in which Anne Coulter was chosen to represent a “decidedly biblical perspective” on David Wheaton’s Christian Worldview Radio Program. In the interview, entitled “The Victimization of America,” Wheaton describes concern for the hurting and oppressed as an anti-bibl... read more
