The purple dress

by Rachel Held Evans Read Distraction Free

“She makes coverings for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple” – Proverbs 31:22

Let me tell you, this little dress took a village.

On Saturday, twelve generous ladies came to my house to act as “servant girls” for a day and help me finish my most daunting sewing/ knitting projects for the womanhood project – a pillow, a dress, and a couple of scarves.  Now, “help” is a bit of a stretch, seeing as how my mom, Betty Palmer and Darlene Bruehl basically made that dress themselves.

Sure it looks kinda like a potato sack.

Sure it generated about 100 pregnancy jokes.

Sure it will be worn for project-related photo ops only.

But that dress represents how much I am loved, how kind people can be, and how sometimes you just gotta suck it up and ask for help.

I’ll be posting a bunch of photos to my Facebook page soon, so stop by. And next week we’ll be auctioning some of the sewing projects for charity - details to follow!

Do you have trouble asking for help? When has it paid off?
